Congratulations to Alexa Curran from Mesquite High School, who placed 3rd in Dramatic Interpretation at the National Individual Events Tournament of Champions, held at James Logan High School this past weekend.  In addition, Mesquite was an Act 1 Sweepstakes Nominee.

Updates, Results, and Summer Workshops

First, Congratulations to the AZ students who competed at the Debate Tournament Of Champions last weekend in Kentucky.  Bill McDonald from Brophy finished 2nd in the Extemp Round-Robin, Noah Wuerfel from Chandler Prep finished 7th in Congressional Debate, Carlos Ochoa from Brophy reached the Semifinals of Congressional Debate, and Andy McCoy from Brophy was the 15th place speaker in Policy Debate.  Coming up will be the NIETOC and the Extemp TOC heading into NFL Nationals in June.

This summer, there will be many opportunities to improve and prepare for next year.  Applications for the Southwest Speech and Debate Institute are due by May 31.  You can find more information at www.southwestdebateinstitute.org.  In addition, the ASU Debate team will host a 3 day policy debate workshop in June.  Details can be found here.

Finally, we have some updates to the sanctioned calendar.  It is available on the calendar of this website.

Thank You All!

Thank you to everyone who helped make this year’s FLA Winter Trophy Tournaments so successful.  Results should be up on Joy of Tournaments shortly.  Now, please make sure that all of your invoices are submitted so that the FLA can be paid.

Coming up, we have a full semester of competition ahead of us.  Check the schedule here, and make sure to read all of the tournament invitations at www.joyoftournaments.com/az.  Each tournament has specific deadlines.  The ASU tournament in particular has some specific deadlines coming up in the next few weeks.

The National Forensic League Qualifier tournament, currently scheduled for 3/29-31/2012, needs a home.  If you believe that your school or site could host this important event, contact Meg Howell at mmhowell@mpsaz.org.

Finally, it is time to choose the next Policy Debate topic.  The National Federation of High Schools has put out the final ballot and Arizona gets a vote.  Please e-mail your choice to me at berlat@phoenixunion.org no later than Friday, December 9.  One vote per school.  The topic choices are:

Infrastructure Resolved: The United States federal government should substantially increase its transportation infrastructure investment in the United States.

 and

Immigration Resolved: The United States federal government should substantially increase its legal protection of economic migrants in the United States.

Monday Morning Updates!

The Mountain View Toro Country Classic invitation is up and ready for registration.  The Classic is on November 4-5 and will feature NIETOC bids, as well as a Congressional Debate Supersession.

The Glendale Community College tournament is this weekend.  Make sure to read the invitation if you are planning on going.  This tournament is a bit different from what we are used to.

The DV Desert Sun Invitational is in a few weeks, and will feature debate TOC bids.

Results have been posted for the Southwest Speech and Debate Institute Tournament.  Make sure to get those points entered into NFL to get your team started on the right foot this year.

Congratulations to our Champions!

After three extremely busy weeks, Arizona has our slate of National Qualifiers and our 2011 State Champions!  Lists of Qualifiers and Champions will be posted here shortly.  In the meantime, begin thinking about the 2011-2012 calendar.  If you wish to host a tournament next season, make sure that you have filled out the appropriate sanctioning form, located here.  Return it to Kevin Berlat by April 1 so that the AIASSDAC can compile the calendar during the meeting on April 13th.
